black and white rock

For many of us, experiencing nature is truly spiritual.  I believe this is true even when we are not completely aware of the intensity of the experience.  A good example of this is an experience I had several years ago on the summit of Cadillac Mountain in the Acadia National Park.  Because of its location in Maine and elevation, the summit of Cadillac Mountain receives first light in the United States every morning.  I was up before 4:00 AM to be sure that I had time to get to the summit, set-up my camera equipment, and capture the sunrise from the earliest twilight to the appearance of the Sun rising over the horizon.  Close to a hundred others were making the same quest, although for most it was not to photograph, only to experience.  It was quite an experience.  Most surprising to me was the reverence shown by those sharing this sunrise.  Even the children seemed unusually well-behaved.  Sounds were limited to the occasional hushed comment and the “oohs” and “ahs” in response to the increasingly brilliant hues in the lightening sky.  Once the Sun finally made it appearance and ringed the clouds with intense light, people began to disperse.  I am certain however that this experience is still alive in all of us that shared that single sunrise.

Sunrise with Egg Rock in the distanceMy motivation for creating art is to explore our many and varied connections with nature.  I use photography as a means of sharing the spiritual and sensory experience of walking in the woods, enjoying a mountain vista, and sitting on a rugged coast watching the waves crashing against the rocks.  My goal is to create evocative images which generate the range of emotional reactions experienced during these times.

My images take many forms depending on the message and emotion I am trying to portray.  The complexity of nature can be easily seen in detailed close-ups of flowers and other natural objects.  The majesty of nature is evident in the colors of the sunrise and sunset seen from a mountain overlook or along the beach.  The power of nature is expressed by water crashing against the rocks while tranquility can be seen in the continual blur of water cascading down a mountain stream.
